In 1966, the National Park Service designated Nantucket Town a National Historic Landmark and listed it in the National Register of Historic Places. Cobblestone, tree-lined streets, historic whaling captains' mansions, a vibrant waterfront, one of the best intact collections of late 17th- to mid-19th century buildings in the United States -- these are just a few of the many charms of historic downtown Nantucket.
From the earliest Quaker settlers to the prosperity of the whaling era, Nantucket's past remains visible today in the midst of a vibrant community. Town features world-famous fine dining presented by the island's accomplished chefs, fabulous shops and boutiques and a thriving art community hosting theater productions and gallery openings.
Town's streets radiate out from Main Street and from the harbor, and most in-town homes are within walking distance to all that Town has to offer.
