North and east of the Polpis Road at the head of the harbor, Wauwinet, Squam, and Quidnet are extremely private and quiet. Beyond them to the north are Coatue and Great Point—a conservation area accessible only by 4-wheel drive. Dirt roads here wind through landscapes of singularly beautiful heath.
The beaches are the best on the island for finding seashells. Most homes in Wauwinet feature views of the harbor and Great Point Light. Squam offers views of the Atlantic. Quidnet looks out over Sankaty Light, the Atlantic and Sesachacha Pond. This sandy-bottomed pond is popular with windsurfers and families with small children.
